Training Courses

Training for Beginners
Complete beginners are initially invited to join the club and attend a beginner course. We run these at various times during the year but they can be very popular, meaning there is usually a wait. During the winter months our beginners are encouraged to attend our pool sessions on a Monday evening at a local indoor pool, to practice basic paddling and capsize drill under the supervision of one of our Instructors. During the summer months (May to August) we run formal courses for juniors and adults on a Thursday evening on the River Stour. You may get the chance to paddle both kayak and open canoe and we teach you the basic skills required to paddle safely as part of an Instructor-led group.
We aim to train you so that you can attain your BCU Paddlepower (U14s), BCU 1-Star, and BCU 2-Star awards. All essential equipment can be provided for those on the courses.

Course Fees – We make a small charge for some courses which will be advertised with the course. There is also a small charge for borrowing club equipment if you need to.

Training for Intermediates
Once you’ve obtained your BCU 2-Star you are now an ‘Intermediate’ paddler who can paddle well and enjoy the sport. You can stop your training there and just enjoy local river paddles and the like. However, if you wish to carry on training then we can cater for your further needs.

Taking part in a BCU Foundation Safety & Rescue training course is recommended to help make you a safer paddler. We run events to help you build up your paddling stamina so that you join in on longer club trips, and we offer post-2-star training which encompasses the skills required to perfect your paddling technique to obtain your BCU 3-Star in one of the main disciplines. These disciplines are Open canoe, White water kayaking, Sea kayaking, Kayak surfing and Touring.

Training for Advanced Paddlers, Leaders & Instructors

If you wish to progress to leading groups we can provide guidance, coaching, and opportunities to log experience for your BCU 4-Star leader award. This can be in white water kayaking and open canoeing, sea kayaking or kayak surfing. We can also provide coaching and opportunities to log experience for BCU 5-Star awards.

We try to offer as much support as we can for paddlers looking to become leaders or instructors, or those wanting to take higher level coaching awards. We give opportunities to teach groups of beginners and intermediate paddlers, and we can provide guidance and mentoring by more experienced coaches.
